Happy World Oceans Day 2010!

A lot of groups and websites are celebrating World Oceans Day today.  Here are two that you might want to check out:

The Ocean Project is hosting a World Oceans Day website at: www.theoceanproject.org/wod/

If you like eating seafood, please try to ensure it’s sustainable.  SeaChoice, Canada’s most comprehensive sustainable seafood program, has a website at:  www.seachoice.org

Do something good for our Oceans today!

Happy Earth Day

April 22nd, 2010 by Alison Wheatley in Greetings

Happy Earth Day, 2010, Everyone!

EarthLet’s celebrate our fabulous home planet today, as well as pledge that we will help make a positive difference in the next year.  Read the last paragraph in my blog entry below (”Earth Days”) if you want some inspiration!

If you’d like to send your friends an Earth Day e-card, check out World Wildlife Fund US which has a small but nice selection on their website

It is rather poignant to celebrate our planet on the same day as reading Newsweek’s 100 Places to Remember Before They Disappear.   It’s an inventory of some of our world’s most beautiful places and a reminder that if we let climate change continue we will lose these places.

As Stewart Brand says in Earth Days, we all have a unique opportunity to make a contribution that will last for eons after we’ve passed on.   And if we all do something, then we will be able to save the 5,966 endangered species, feed the one billion people who are hungry, and stop storms and weather problems from destroying lives and areas on our planet.

What are you going to do for the Earth this year?

Happy New Year 2010!

January 8th, 2010 by Alison Wheatley in Greetings

2010Hopefully you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday season, and will have good health, much happiness and abundant prosperity in 2010.  Let’s all work together to make 2010 a good year for our planet as well.

It’s fascinating how different organizations welcome in the new year.  Today, I received several emails from groups that I support.

EarthThe David Suzuki Foundation sent an email out to its Community Leaders (I am one) including some information and a link to a survey.  The survey involved questions about climate change, and it’s funny how pre-Christmas actions seem so long ago once it’s a new year!

Conservation International sent an email listing their goals for 2010.   Some of their goals are the same as those of other organizations, such as working to secure a stable global climate (both CARE and the David Suzuki Foundation were among the many NGO’s involved with Copenhagen).  Conservation International’s goals are wide-reaching, and involve things like saving our oceans and helping to feed people.

Two Horned RhinocerosOther organizations emailed out their thanks for a successful 2009 and their hopes for 2010.  As well, many groups have posted a note on their website recognizing the contribution their supporters (including you?) made in 2009.  Most of them are really nice, including the International Rhino Foundation which said it like it is in their Heartfelt Thanks:

IRF’s success is only possible because of your support.  As 2009 comes to a close, we’d like to thank all of you who have contributed time, money, and enthusiasm to our work this past year.  It’s your belief in IRF that makes our work possible.

Those are likely the words our planet and its animals would say if they had voices, and likely what many people say when humanitarian workers help them.

Let’s work together to make 2010 a great year (and the start to a great decade) for our planet and the animals and people we share it with.  What groups are in your area that could use some help?  It’s time to reach out to them.  Make it a great year!  Happy New Year!

Welcome to Voices For Our Planet

October 19th, 2009 by Alison Wheatley in Greetings

Birds on a treeThis blog is all about giving a greater voice to the people and groups who are working to find or implement solutions to our planet’s problems.

In 2008, the International Union for Conservation of Nature reported that there are 5,966 endangered species of vertebrate animals (mammals, birds, etc.) in the world. Also, more than one billion people are undernourished, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization. And the climate is changing, as destructive weather such as storms, droughts and floods becomes more common.

But there’s also great hope, and many people are thinking up innovative solutions and managing charitable efforts to help make a positive difference for our planet. As always, I am honored to join those people who are trying to stop animal extinctions, feed people in developing countries (and closer to home), and help our planet in so many, many ways. Each one of them is needed. And so are You.

Time is short, and all hands are needed on deck. This blog will talk about situations, solutions and opportunities for you to help. The dedicated people and organizations that are helping our planet deserve our support. This blog will provide another avenue for their work, and getting the word out about what they are doing. Our planet, its people and its animals deserve our support.

Please feel free to comment about any posting. Or if you’d like to get in touch, email us at info@voicesforourplanet.com .

Enjoy! And be active – it’s time to help.
